OPERATIONAL GAP

Legacy metal doors and barriers cannot stop angle grinder and other cutting tools. An increase in plate thickness and material hardness escalates weight such that the door needs a motor to operate. If the power source is cut, occupants cannot open the door due to its weight.

Lightweight alternatives were sought that can resist forcible entry for over 10 minutes.

Technology Description

Unlike monolithic barriers in the marketplace, metallic-ceramic composite (MetalCeramix™) panels are made up of a pattern of ceramic and metallic inclusions, sealed in a metallic foam core, and protected with external stainless steel face sheets.

Ceramic inclusions offer hardness to resist cutting tools. The geometry and pattern of the inclusions produce off-design loads on cutting tools. These loads destroy angle grinder blades and drills such that the cutting progress is stopped after only 10-15% penetration through the thickness. Water jet cutter flow is dispersed into a splash like flow that defeats its cutting ability.
